Family Environment & Subjective Well-being

The family environment "involves the situations and social climate events within families. Since each family contains different individuals in a different setting, each family environment is unique. The environments can differ in many ways. For example, one noticeable difference lies at the socioeconomic level. Some families live in luxurious 24-room estates, own a Jaguar and a BMW inclusion to the family mini-van, and can afford to have a crustacean cocktail for an appetizer whenever they choose. Other families live in two-room shacks, struggle with time payments on their used '85 Chevy and have to eat macaroni made with artificially processed cheese four times a week.

Steps to establishing a Positive Family Environment – 5 Practical Steps

Step 1: Communicate

Model good communication in your family. Families will learn more from observing each other than from what they say.

Step 2: Show Love and Care

Everybody needs to love and be loved. Show your love and care for everybody in the family in big and small ways every day. Say, "I love you," often.

Step 3: Respect Each Other

Each member of the family deserves respect in a positive family environment. Expect it from your children and demonstrate it in the way you serve them.

Step 4: Cooperate and Work Together

Families function more smoothly when everybody chips. Working and cooperating develop companionship and loyalty.

Step 5: Spend Time Together

Parents and children should schedule time every day to be with each member of the family. Supper is an excellent time to share and catch up on everybody's activities. Researches show that kids who have dinner with their families are better behaved and do better in life and in the workplace.

On the other side, Subjective well-being is the practical term for happiness and life satisfaction—thinking and notion that your life is going well, not ill. Scientists depend primarily on self-report surveys to assess the happiness of individuals, but they have upheld these scales with other types of measures. People's levels of subjective well-being are affected by both internal factors, such as personality and outlook, and external factors, such as the community in which they live.

Causes of Subjective Well-being

There are some external influences on individuals' happiness—the situations in which they live. It is likely to be happy and satisfy living in poverty with ill health or with a child who has a severe disease, but this is tough. In contrast, it is simple to be happy if one has supportive & understanding family and friends, ample resources to meet one's desire, and fitness. But even here, there are chances - people who are depressed and unsatisfied and sad while living in extraordinary circumstances. Thus, people can be happy or sad just due to their personalities and the way they think about the world or because of the external circumstances in which they live. People vary in their wealth to happiness—in their personalities and outlook—and this means that knowing their living conditions is not enough to predict satisfaction.

Numerous studies have shown that youngsters are growing up in families with a happy, harmonious parental marriage experience fewer problems and higher well-being than those from divorced or martially distressed families. A perfect home environment is one where there is a proper appreciation to encourage the desired behaviour. The family environment can be a vital source of support for developing children, providing close relationships, strong parenting skills, good communication, and modelling positive behaviours. It can also be a complex environment when these supports are lacking or when negative adult behaviours like smoking and have drinking are present. Where adolescent health is concerned, the family matters, and parents’ matter.
