Role of Effective Socialization




Broadly speaking socialization is a process by which we learn the norms of a group, its habits & ideals. Socialization is known as the process of inducting the individual into the social world. By this an individual acquires necessary skills & behaviour to adapt and enact effective in a social context. Socialization is a lifelong process and its almost similar in all societies. Socialization occurs at various levels:

  • ·Primary 
  • · Secondary
  • · Adult
  • ·Anticipatory
  • ·Re-socialization

Some of the important characteristics of socialization are:

·       Helps to develop self-discipline

·       Acts as a buffer against unwanted behaviour of members in a society

·       Socialization is more rapid when there are no barriers to it (E.g. Conflict of interest)

·       It happens in both formal and informal manner

·       It is a lifelong and continuous process

Now after getting brief idea of what socialization is, we can essentially try to understand how deeply it affects our life. Man is a social animal and it needs human interaction for its overall holistic growth & development. In psychology there are numerous theories that talk about developmental issues in an individual. These developmental issues can be physical, emotional or psychological in nature. Developmental issues arise when certain needs are demands are not fulfilled at the time of various developmental stage of an individual. Now let’s see in what socialization can play an important role:

·       Helps to explore and learn right from early childhood days

·       Due to socialization cognitive development takes place in easy developmental stages

·       Socialization also enables us to assume various adult roles while we do pretend play

·       It also helps to form play groups and study groups

·       Enables us to interact with other family members & help us to understand the power structure in the family

·       Socialization also dictates our choice of friends and food habits and sports choices

·       Career choices are also influenced by the process socialization

·       During adolescent period most of the choices we make is majorly affected by socialization

·       Success in career or growth in business is also determined by socialization

·       Choosing a partner & building a family depends how well we have acquired the learning & skills via socialization




Thus, from the above it is quite clear how the process of socialization adds value to our life. It helps not only to build proper family systems but also an optimal functioning community
